Steve Thomas/Proficiency and Training flights across America
March 12, 2001 Jennings, Louisiana to Baton Rouge, Louisiana
This morning in Jennings the day started with thunder storms, followed by torrential rains, high winds and tornadoes! I never thought that I would get to fly, but by noon the clouds were parting and moving to the east rapidly.
I checked out my weather sources and decided that it would be a very good idea to take advantage of the tail winds left behind the low pressure. At 4:00 there wasn't anything more than an occasional thin cloud in the sunny blue sky and the temps were in the 70's and muggy. Winds on the ground were about 5 mph from the west.
I made excellent time on the flight to Baton Rouge. I slowly climbed as I flew to the east and was doing 40-45 mph. About 50 miles from Jennings I saw a major swamp ahead of me that spanned nearly 20 miles across and over 100 miles long. I climbed up to 3,000' to cross it and my ground speed increased to 57 mph. The flight was 88 miles total and took 1 hour and 54 minutes.
At Omni Airpark where I landed there were a few fellow PPC Pilots waiting for me and guided me in on the radio. We all went out for dinner and plan to get together in the morning as I fly out. Craig Gaspar, AKA the Crazy Cajun, treated tonight after guiding me in on the radio. Ray Morrow and Kevin Manual are planning on flying with me part way tomorrow, and so will Craig if he can get away from work. :}
I am hoping to get in a full day tomorrow!
Have a good one!
